Classic cover of the Watchmen TPB The Hollywood trades are all reporting the cast for Zack Snyder's adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon's Watchmen graphic novel. Although a number of big name stars including Keanu Reeves, Tom Cruise and Jude Law had all expressed interest in participating in the project, Warner Brothers' determination to keep costs down evidently discouraged the big name thespians. Billy Crudup will portray the enigmatic (and godlike) Dr. Manhattan, the only character with "real" superpowers and the role that Keanu Reeves supposedly coveted, while it will be Matthew Goode, not Jude Law, in the crucial role of Ozymandias. Jeffrey Dean Morgan will play the twisted Vietnam vet known as The Comedian, with Milan Ackerman taking on the key female role of the Silk Spectre, and Patrick Wilson putting on the padding in order to portray the Nite Owl, a victim of middle-age spread. Ace character actor Jackie Earle Haley will assay the key role of Rorschach. Filming of this long-delayed project, which has been in development for years and had attracted a procession of directors including Terry Gilliam, Darren Aronofsky, and Paul Greenglass, is set to begin this fall. Zach Snyder, who apparently has succeeded where so many helmers have failed, plans to shoot Watchmen using the green screen technique he used on 300 -- a method of shooting which along with the film's relatively modest casting costs should keep the film's budget at a level where Warners feels the dark superhero saga has a chance to be very profitable. Moore and Gibbon's Watchmen has been justly described as "The Great Gatsby of graphic novels," because like Fitzgerald's masterpiece it combines huge continuing sales with real literary merit. Needless to say a solid Watchmen movie could result in the Watchmen graphic novel ending up as the #1 best-selling graphic novel of 2008 (or whatever year the movie is released in--Moore's V for Vendetta enjoyed that kind of success in the wake of its movie adaptation in 2006). | | No comments for this item |

The future is wide open, for a pizza delivary guy. According to The Hollywood Reporter 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will announce at the San Diego Comic-Con that the first original Futurama production since the series was canceled in 2003 will be a feature-length film, Futurama: Bender's Big Score that will go directly to DVD and be available on November 27th. The new film features the show's original cast and crew, and its release will mark the second time that a Fox cartoon series has spawned a direct-to-DVD film after cancellation ( Family Guy: Stewie, the Untold Story was the first). Fox plans to release three additional Futurama direct-to-DVD features during 2008, Futurama: The Beast With a Billion Backs, Futurama: Bender's Game, and Futurama: Into the Wild, Green Yonder. In addition to the original cast each Futurama film will feature guest stars. Al Gore, Sarah Silverman and Coolio appear in Bender's Big Score. The release of the direct-to-DVD features doesn't really affect the previously announced plans to revive Futurama in episodic form on Comedy Central in 2008. The producers of the series plan on chopping up the features, adding new material and airing the resulting reconfigured new 22-minute episodes on Comedy Central during 2008 along with reruns of the original 72 episodes. The reappearance of Futurama is good news for retailers with new Futurama figures coming from Toynami and the excellent on-going Futurama comics and graphic novel collections from Bongo Comics. | | No comments for this item |

Nick Fury from Secret Wars III Hillary Swank MTV's Movie Blog is claiming that Avi Arad has confirmed that Academy Award-winner Hilary Swank will make a cameo appearance in Jon Favreau's Iron Man movie that is due out next summer. Even as Arad confirmed Ms. Swank's appearance he also appeared to admit that Samuel L. Jackson would also have small role in Iron Man as Cold War superspy Nick Fury foreshadowing the release of a Nick Fury film, which is one of the next projects on the Marvel Studios' docket. Now that Marvel is making its own movies it is free to cross-promote its heroes and fans should be prepared for a steady barrage of crossover cameos teasing future films especially since Marvel is now down to making films with characters that require some introducing to the mass audience that doesn't read comics. Arad told MTV: "It's because now we have control over the properties. Now we can mix and match. It used to be different studios having different characters -- you try to get three major studios to sit together and cross-promote -- it's too tough." The question is will Hilary Swank be a female S.H.I.E.L.D. agent or will she be the star of a film centered on a female Marvel superhero? | | No comments for this item |

IRON MAN Downey Jr. will be reaching out to the San Diego crowd to build buzz for his 2008 superhero flick Cannes has Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie on the Croisette. Sundance has Robert Redford on the slopes. And Comic-Con? It's got Klingons in Renaissance costumes running around downtown San Diego.
From July 26 to 29, tens of thousands of devoted pop culture fans will descend upon Southern California for the largest gathering of sci-fi and fantasy enthusiasts held on this or any planet. It's been called Woodstock for geeks, but these days it's a whole lot more. The annual Comic-Con convention is now one of the most critical industry events on the calendar, as important to Hollywood as any festival in France or Utah.
What started in 1970 as a small comic-book lovers' conclave (just 300 people made it to that first meeting) today draws more than 120,000 people. And it isn't just fanboys attending the convention's screenings, parties, and panel discussions; among the crowd this year will be Clive Owen (who'll build buzz for Shoot 'Em Up), Jessica Alba (The Eye), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Edward Norton (The Incredible Hulk), and Judd Apatow (Superbad), along with hordes of producers, directors, and writers, like J.J. Abrams, who may announce some of his casting picks for the upcoming Star Trek reboot. For certain genres — the ones involving superheroes, aliens, warriors in leather codpieces, and comic-book characters — there is now no greater launching pad than the floor of the San Diego Convention Center. These days, even some surprising genres — like Westerns (3:10 to Yuma), music-industry satires (Walk Hard), and Broadway musicals (Tim Burton will share clips from his upcoming adaptation of Sweeney Todd) — are finding their way to Comic-Con.
''It's the golden age of geekdom,'' says frequent Comic-Con conventioneer Brad Meltzer, a novelist and comics writer. ''Hollywood has figured out the location of the supergeek clubhouse. They've jimmied the locks, moved in, and spruced the place up. And we're sort of sadly and pathetically okay with it, because they bring lots of hot actresses and nice film clips.'' | | No comments for this item |

The Del Rey version of Train Man The train keeps a rollin', toward Manga Island, in this case it's the multimedia phenomena of "Densha Otoko," aka "Train Man." The "Train Man" story has been quite a popular story in Japan, spawning a movie, TV show, and several print versions. Three of the manga versions have been licensed in the US, giving me a rare opportunity to compare and contrast two of them. In addition to "Train Man," I've also had a chance to check out "Banya: The Explosive Delivery Man," the debut manhwa (comics from Korea) from Dark Horse
The "Train Man" centers around the possible true story of how an anime/manga otaku (a hardcore fan, with not so good connotations in Japan) stands up for a young girl being harassed on a subway and how they end up in love. The word spread through an anonymous message board in Japan and soon became part of a captivating franchise. The endearing story of a geek and his momentary act of courage, real or imagined, is a great underdog story, as it gives otakus everywhere a glimmer of hope and possibly the courage to push past their normally shy demeanor. "Train Man" is a heartwarming tale that deals with geek culture in a mostly positive light. Rooting for the underdog is easy to do in the case of the lost and lonely Train, and I felt myself wanting to add to the encouragement he gets from the chat rooms he frequents. The chat rooms themselves speak volumes about the otaku culture, who live vicariously through the Train Man's act of courage and bit of luck, much like many otaku do through reading escapist comics.
Other than art style, the biggest difference in the CMX version and the Del Rey version is the formatting. Del Rey's "Train Man" is told in a whirlwind single volume, while CMX's "Densha Otoko" plays out over three volumes. Again, I prefer the way the CMX version plays out so far. However, Del Rey's one volume affair is great for manga fans who want to see how the story plays out in one sitting, don't want to wait for future volumes, or those on a tight budget. Del Rey's version has the usual awesome cultural notes that fans have come to expect from their manga line and a little more about the "Train Man" phenomenon. |
